Physics Behind the Foody 12

The Foody 12 uses a siphon system to move water from the top of the tower to the bottom. The siphon system is important, as it allows for each growing pod to be filled with water without needing a separate pump for each pod. Instead, a water pump is used in the reservoir to pump water to the top of the tower, then the water siphons down through the entire system.

Siphons work through a combination of gravity and atmospheric pressure. The specifics of how siphons work is actually still a point of debate in the scientific community, but there are two leading theories that are generally accepted as being accurate. Bernoulli's equation is used to calculate the different aspects of a siphon system, which you can read more about here.
